Q:
On November 24, 1950, X Corps and Eighth Army were getting ready to make
their final moves to the border between North Korea and China. Was it then that
the Chinese intervened? Had you prior to that time heard about the Chinese
coming in?
A:
We had heard rumors that the Chinese were in North Korea through the X Corps'
own intelligence network. Our confidence in Eighth Army intelligence was so low
that X Corps set up an intelligence net on its own. On November 22, as I recall,
we captured several Chinese. This made it now certain that the Chinese were in
North Korea.
However, we had difficulty convincing Eighth Army that there were Chinese in
North Korea. Eighth Army intelligence officers said they didn't have any evidence
