D-3. Site Description. The Former Hammer Army Airfield consisted of 1617 acres. Most of
the Former Airfield site is now the Fresno Air Terminal. Other portions of the site are used for
commercial and industrial development and for municipal parks. A portion of the site remains
undeveloped.
D-4. Site History. The site was acquired between 1941-1945 for use as a sub-base for Camp
Pinedale. Hammer Army Airfield was an integral part of the aerial defense of the west coast
during World War II. The site was excessed beginning in 1946 by the war assets administration.
